Children Hurt in Falls More Often than You'd Expect

Our colleague Kathy Caso brings attention to falls as a common cause of serious injury in children. The SAFE KIDS Campaign shows that falls are the leading cause of injury in children, injuring more than 2.5 million kids each year, with 5,000 of them (mostly toddlers) being hurt by falling from windows.

The cause of falls can sometimes be attributed to the carelessness of the person responsible for the child. However, unsafe conditions at home or on playgrounds, around the neigborhood, in apartment complexes, or on commercial or retail properties can be a large factor in causing the injury or lending to the seriousness of the injury.

Trampoline accidents also pose a serious hazard to children.
While you would never put a trampoline over a concrete driveway, how do you know that your neighbors won’t?
Trampoline injuries alone account for nearly 100,000 emergency room visits alone, with 80,000 of those being aged 14 and under.

These statistics show that the common (windows) and the uncommon (trampolines) are all potential dangers to young children.
