A 52-year-old woman died Thursday night after falling beneath a Metro bus in Shoreline. The woman stepped off the bus at a stop near Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue Northwest in Shoreline. But she then apparently slipped and fell off the curb and beneath the bus. The bus driver pulled away from the stop, hitting the woman.
Her death is a tragedy…something that should have been avoided. Based on personal observations it appears that Metro–institutionally–values a tight schedule more than public safety. This is evidenced by the number of Metro buses that enter the intersection when the light is yellow and even run red lights.
One has to ask: how much more time would it have taken to check the mirrors and make sure all of the riders who disembarked were clear of the bus? Was getting to the next stop on time worth the deceased woman’s life?
