A King County Superior Court jury recently awarded $4.2 million to two sisters who were abused for years by a priest in the Mormon Church. The jury found the Church liable for intentional misconduct and negligence based on its failure to prevent or stop the abuse despite the sisters’ repeated complaints to the church hierarchy.

This verdict powerfully illustrates the damage of sexual abuse, particularly where vulnerable members of our population are involved. If you or a loved one has been the victim of abuse you should contact a personal injury attorney to find out what action can be taken to address the abuse and prevent repetition.

The older of the two sisters first reported the priest’s abuse in 1994 to a church bishop. However, the bishop did not alert the child’s mother or remove the priest from his position. As a result, the priest continued his abuse of the older sister and also began to abuse the younger sister. The Mormon Church will be required to pay the majority of the verdict.
