On August 21, 2006, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) passed a regulation regarding event data recorders (EDRs). This rule specifies uniform requirements for the accuracy, collection, storage, survivability, and retrievability of onboard motor vehicle crash event data in cars equipped with EDRs. The rule also contains an extensive discussion of privacy issues and explains how it preempts State and local law.
