Each month, the jury manager randomly pulls about 1,000 names of Island County residents for jury duty in Island County superior and district courts. While most of those people won’t end up serving on a jury, it’s a complicated job to keep track of all the individuals, their jury status, jury fees and court schedules.
It’s also a complicated job to pick a jury in today’s “tort reform” climate. Insurance companies are spending millions of dollars to create the impression that juries cannnot be trusted and render enormous verdicts in frivolous cases. But at the same time insurance companies request juries in 100 percent of personal injury cases filed in Washington. The insurance companies are poisoning juries against personal injury plaintiffs and then demanding that they decide the plaintiffs’ cases.
