A six-vehicle accident occurred on September 6, 2007 on northbound Interstate 5 at Northeast 175th Street in Shoreline.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the brakes on a pickup truck hauling a trailer failed, causing the pickup to slam into another vehicle, setting off a chain reaction. An elderly couple was in the pickup truck.

As a result of the accident, one person suffered serious injures and was taken to Harborview Medical Center.

Rarely do brakes suddenly “fail” without negligence. It’s quite possible that the brakes failed because of a manufacturing defect or inadequate maintenance. These possibilities should be thoroughly investigated in any case where injuries are apparently caused by equipment failure (instead of or in addition to operator error). In a serious injury case it’s important to retain qualified experts in the field who are able to identify what went wrong.
